Partner Update: Walgreens

This past weekend, Walgreens VP of Digital Health Adam Pellegrini spoke at the Health 2.0 Fall Conference on the influence of consumer technology and wearables on promoting healthy lifestyles.

As the largest nationwide retail pharmacy chain, Walgreens dove headfirst into the new age of healthcare technology, and the company has successfully utilized digital health to benefit both Walgreens and its customers—and to promote personal wellness—through a variety of application programming interfaces (APIs).

One such API is the Pharmacy Prescriptions Program, which allows third-party mobile applications to quickly order refills of prescriptions to any Walgreens pharmacy. By allowing other companies to integrate with the Pharmacy Prescriptions Program, they’ve given users more freedom to manage their personal health.

Another unique component of the Walgreens APIs is the Balance Rewards Program, which rewards customers for making healthy choices—getting in shape, eating right and better managing health and lifestyle. Every time a customer makes a healthy choice, they’re given balance rewards points from Walgreens.

Many of Walgreen’s other partners have also been incorporated into the Balance Rewards Program. That means customers can earn even more balance reward points by using Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, MapMyFitness and other programs.

With 1.8 million active users in the variety of APIs, Walgreens is a model for companies everywhere looking to engage customers on a digital platform to promote personal wellness, and that is why Healthspek has partnered with Walgreens.

Through Healthspek, users have access to the Walgreens Pharmacy Prescription Refill API. This allows you to quickly refill prescriptions to any Walgreens pharmacy from anywhere in the world and on any mobile device.

“We are excited about our relationship with Walgreens. Walgreens leadership position in technology and consumer empowerment fits perfectly with Healthspek's message to consumers ‘Own Your Chart!’,” said Randy Farr, president of Healthspek.

When companies work together, everyone benefits. More and more organizations are collaborating to engage consumers, educate on the importance of health management and in the end, shape healthier and happier lives.
